The Auctioning of Attention
When you load a page with ads, the ad isn't chosen beforehand. Instead, an auction happens in the milliseconds before the page fully loads. This is Real-Time Bidding (RTB).
The Bid Request
The publisher's site sends a "bid request" to an ad exchange. This request contains a massive amount of data about you to help advertisers decide how much your attention is worth.
| Data Point | Value to Advertiser |
|---|---|
| Geolocation (Lat/Long) | Local targeting (e.g., nearby restaurants). |
| Device ID / Cookie Sync ID | Cross-referencing with external broker profiles. |
| Page URL / Context | Targeting based on current interests (e.g., reading about cars). |
The Privacy Nightmare
The bid request is broadcast to dozens or hundreds of participating advertisers (Demand Side Platforms, or DSPs). Even if an advertiser doesn't win the auction (i.e., their ad doesn't show), they still receive the bid request containing your data. This allows thousands of companies to harvest location and browsing data without ever serving an ad.
